Hello everybody! My name is Xuan Hong and I’m junior majoring in Biology and Environmental Science and Policy. I‘m interested in biodiversity, conservation, and nature, and love to go on nature hikes/scuba dives to explore interesting stuff. I like to grow exotic plants, and have given a number of public talks at Singapore’s national libraries. I also play badminton and table tennis for fun. I look forward to meeting everyone coming to Duke, as well as other like-minded people. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
Apart from research, I enjoy swimming, cooking, baking, scrapbooking and exploring the farmers markets around Duke’s vicinity during my free time. I also enjoy traveling and exploring new places and cu ltures. I have a lovely dog called Nugget Pouter who is white and fluffy and loves adventure. I love Nugget very much and always look forward to my daily FaceTime sessions with him and my family.
I’m Michelle and I am a junior neuroscience major. In my next life I might major in physics. I like motorbikes and tennis, although recently I’ve been more involved in triathlon training. My research interests lie in neuroimmunology and nerve cell regeneration and I am currently working on my thesis in Dr Carol Colton’s neuroimmunology lab in the DUMC’s Division of Neurology. I am a volunteer with Duke Hospital’s Oncology Recreation Therapy Unit. Over the past summer I interned at a Durham non-profit and I received a research fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Feel free to email me if you have any questions about Duke, research at Duke, finding a summer internship, or if you want to talk about motorbikes or neurology.
FoodFest this Friday, Oct 21!
Hi friends,
3 reasons why you should sign up, and sign up fast:
- Free FoodFest Tshirts for the first few who sign up! IA is giving out free shirts to only the first 250 people that day, I think you should skip their line and get one from SSA instead
- Help yourself to the free Singaporean food without having to spend the 4 food vouchers you will be issued!
- Come on … you don’t need a 3rd reason, do you?
We’ll update with more information on Wednesday or Thursday, till then take care and have a great weekend!
Mid-Autumn Festival!
SSA will be holding its MAF celebration next Saturday, 10 Sep. You should all be marking this date on your calendars now
Event Details:
Venue: Keohane 4B-402 Media Room
Time: 6.30pm – 11.30pm
I don’t know when was the last time you guys had Singaporean food, but be excited, for we are going to cater some really good food from Merlion Restaurant (think Hainanese Chicken Rice, Char Kway Teow, Hokkien Mee etc). And your hardworking vice president, Tay Rong En, actually brought back snow-skin mooncakes and paper lanterns from SINGAPORE!!! How awesome is that? Good company, good food, good mooncakes, good lanterns, and to top it off, we’ll also bring out our karaoke machine for the night!
Also, this year, I’ll like to encourage all of you to bring along a friend to our MAF celebration. This friend can be your roommate, a new friend you just made at Orientation Week, or really just anyone you have in mind. It will be a good opportunity for SSA to introduce Singaporean culture to members of the Duke community, and also for the rest of us, to make new friends at the event.
With that in mind, I need you to fill up this form now, indicating your availability and also if you intend to bring a friend along so we can get the #s right and cater sufficient food.
Thanks, and see you guys on the 10th!
Picnic in the gardens!
Dearest Singaporeans!
Welcome back and I hope you had a great FDOC!
We’ll be having a PICNIC in the Sarah P. Gardens this Sunday 4th Sep. There’ll be snacks, fruits and drinks. Do come and hang out with the coolest group of people on campus =D, and exchange your summer stories!
We’ll meet at West Bus Stop at 4pm and then walk over to the Gardens. And maybe dinner after that?
See you on Sunday (especially the new students joining us this year!)
Cheers,
Roger
